Watch a short film accompanying “The Second Before Slipping”, from the debut album by Zurich based duo Sopraterra
Zurich based duo Sopraterra comprises Polish composer Magda Drozd and Italian artist Nicola Genovese. Their debut album, Seven Dances To Embrace The Hollow, is a joint release by Präsens Editionen, a Lucerne based label known for its experimental projects, and La Becque Editions, the label arm of the artist residency programme La Becque.
Nicola Genovese explains: “The video is a collaboration with Johannesburg based filmmaker Sicelo S Mabuza. While on tour, we filmed in the Constitution Hill area, in the heart of downtown Johannesburg. Sicelo showed us several locations, but as we walked through an underground parking lot, we all knew it was the perfect spot. Its breathable, ghostly atmosphere provided the ideal visual frame for our song.”
“The Second Before Slipping” is the first track on Seven Dances To Embrace The Hollow. Genovese continues: "The song evokes the fleeting moments just before an unpredictable fall. An eerie flute gradually transitions into an eruptive, volatile soundworld, punctuated with deep, distorted detonations of bass.
“The video aims to recreate a sense of disorientation and daydreaming. The dimly lit underground parking lot, scattered with abandoned cars, serves as the video’s central motif. We sought to reflect the album’s core concept – constructing an unstable time warp where melodies from different eras emerge, fragment, and disappear as if caught in a space-time centrifuge.”
